And it’s not even to support the group I love…..
I’m a mid twenties year old guy. I’ve been in one girl group fandom for quite a number of years because I genuinely like their music. I openly display my gender for all to see because well, if you’re a fan, it doesn’t matter what gender you are… right?
Anyway, so there’s this forum I go to, which has many young fans. I’m usually nice to everyone, but I mostly keep to the people I’ve known for years when it comes to fanboying. So one day, this user I barely know requests my Skype/MSN contact so that we could ‘become better friends’. I checked her profile, and saw that she was… 12. I said no of course, partly because I don’t know her, partly because I don’t want to be a creepy guy who is friends with a little kid, partly because I hate kids, and partly because, well, what kind of kid wants to talk to a 20 something year old guy anyway. She threw a fit when I said no, and did something totally unexpected.
She called her mother.
So through a bunch of PMs and Emails, I had her mom whine and lecture me on how it was ‘damaging her child’s self esteem’ and ‘turning her into a loser with no friends’ because I rejected her ‘friendship’, since NO ONE rejects her daughter’s friendship. She also lectured me on what a terrible person I am, who probably has no friends, because I refused to make friends with her daughter.
I then told her that I was a 20 something year old guy who wasn’t interested in being friends with children, especially those who I literally know nothing about.
This was when things got ugly.
The mom then called me a rapist, child molester, and many other names, and that I was preying on her daughter. I mean… WTF. I was the one who didn’t even want to be anywhere NEAR her daughter for god’s sake. She also said that because I liked a girl group with young Asian girls (who are now all legal by USA’s standards), I must be into child porn, and using her daughter to get off. She kept sending me more hate mail, but I just ignored them, and forwarded the funnier, delusional ones to my family and friends.
It seemed that it all stopped for a while, until I got a knock on the door, and got cuffed by the cops. My parents had to bail me out, but not before I have a registered sex offender record (apparently they had ‘solid proof’, and chose not to tell me what it was… Damn corrupted American Justice System!! Fuck you cops!!).
Now, my parents and I are going to sue the lady and her daughter (and that doesn’t come cheap!), and remove my name from the records. The stupid record has officially ruined all my chances of future employment and further education, and it’s all because of a 12 year old.
Sigh. I really wish people would do SOMETHING about the younger people in fandom, if only to stop something like this from ever happening to another person. No one deserves to go through what I did. I suggest age restriction and separate forums for the younger members? I dunno… just.. something I guess.
I consider myself lucky that I kept all of the e-mails and PMs as proof, so wish me luck during the court case……
